Prioritizing Foot Exams

""

People with diabetes are at risk for foot-related conditions. These conditions can be prevented by prioritizing self-foot exams.

How should I check my feet?

  1. Wash your feet every day with warm water. Make sure to dry them well.
  2. Check your feet every day. Sit in a chair, lift your foot to the opposite leg, and look at the tops, bottoms, and sides of each foot. You can also use a mirror to look at the bottoms of your feet. Look for blisters, cuts, cracking, redness, sores, or changes to the skin, including texture and how hot or cold your feet feel.
  3. Always wear shoes. Avoid going barefoot, even when you are inside.
  4. Wear shoes that fit. You should also wear socks with your shoes.
  5. Keep your toenails trimmed. Make sure your toenails are trimmed straight across. Smooth any sharp edges with a nail file. Never cut your cuticles or let anyone other than a healthcare provider cut them.
  6. Don’t try to remove any bumps, corns, or calluses. Contact your healthcare provider.
  7. Have your feet checked at every doctor’s appointment. Visit your doctor at least once a year.

How will I know if I should see my doctor for my feet?

If you notice any of the following, contact your healthcare provider:

  • Tingling, burning or pain
  • Change in the color and temperature
  • Dry, cracked skin
  • Loss of feeling
  • Thick, yellow toenails
  • Loss of hair on toes, feet, or lower legs
  • Infection between your toes
  • An ingrown toenail
  • Sores, like blisters, ulcers, or an infected corn

Making foot care a part of your daily routine can help prevent complications and maintain healthy feet. Regular self-exams, proper footwear, and timely medical appointments are important to managing your diabetes. Taking these precautions can help you stay on top of your health and avoid serious foot-related issues.
