Vaccination and Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or have a baby, you have a higher chance of getting sick. You could get sick from COVID-19, flu, RSV, and whooping cough. Few pregnant people get vaccinated. This means they and their babies might not be protected from these serious diseases. Getting vaccinated can help keep you and your baby safe.

What vaccines should I get?

  • COVID-19: Pregnant women are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19, need to go to the hospital, and require special equipment to help them breathe. COVID-19 can also affect a person’s pregnancy.
  • Flu: Pregnant people who get the flu are more likely to go to the hospital, and the flu is harmful to a developing baby. People who get the flu vaccine while pregnant or breastfeeding develop antibodies. These antibodies protect against the flu and are shared with infants through breast milk.
  • RSV: This respiratory virus is one of the most common causes of childhood illness. It can also lead to hospitalization in infants. Depending on when your baby is due, you may need to get vaccinated. People 32 through 36 weeks pregnant from September through January should get the vaccine. Infants under 8 months should also receive the vaccine.
  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis): Infants can’t get vaccinated for pertussis, or whooping cough, until they are 2 months old. Getting a Tdap vaccine during pregnancy passes antibodies to the developing baby. These antibodies provide protection.

Getting vaccinated while pregnant is key to protecting you and your baby. These vaccines help keep you healthier during pregnancy and give your baby a strong start.

Talk to your doctor about which vaccines are right for you and your baby. Make a plan to stay protected. Vaccination can help ensure a healthy future for both of you.
