Effective 5/1/2024 Maryland Medicaid Mandates Retail Pharmacy Copayments

Please be aware and notify your patients that effective May 1, 2024, Maryland Department of Health (MDH) is mandating Managed Care Organizations apply copays for retail prescriptions for the HealthChoice program. Exclusions to this directive include prescriptions for:

  1. Family planning drugs
  2. Individuals younger than 21 years old
  3. Pregnant women

The MDH cost-of-sharing structure is below:

  1. Up to a $3 copayment for non-preferred brand-name drugs,
  2. Up to a $1 copayment for generic drugs, preferred, and HIV/AIDS drugs
